What Your Dashboard Warning Lights Really Mean

Dashboard Warning Lights

What your car is trying to tell you

Modern vehicles are packed with technology designed to keep you safe and informed. One of the most visible ways your car communicates with you is through the dashboard. When a dashboard warning light turns on, it’s your vehicle’s way of saying something needs attention—sometimes urgently.

Ignoring these signals can lead to breakdowns, safety issues, or costly repairs. Recognising the most common dashboard lights and understanding what they indicate can help you respond appropriately and keep your vehicle running smoothly.

What Dashboard Lights Mean

Dashboard lights are colour-coded to indicate the level of urgency. Red lights often signal something that requires immediate action—such as low oil pressure or brake failure. Yellow or orange lights suggest a system that needs checking soon, like the engine or tyre pressure monitoring system. Green and blue lights are generally informational, such as indicators or high-beam status.

Not every light means disaster, but none should be ignored for long.

Engine Warning Light

One of the most recognised symbols is the engine or “check engine” light. This can signal a wide range of issues, from a loose fuel cap to engine misfires. If the light is steady, it’s usually safe to continue driving, but you should book an inspection soon. If it’s flashing, it could indicate a serious fault—such as a misfiring engine—and it’s best to stop driving and seek help.

Battery Warning Light

This light suggests a problem with the charging system. It could mean the alternator is failing or the battery is no longer holding a charge. While you might still be able to drive for a short time, the vehicle could lose power unexpectedly. Prompt attention can prevent being stranded.

Oil Pressure Light

Low oil pressure can cause severe engine damage if ignored. If this light appears while driving, pull over safely and turn off the engine. Check your oil level and top it up if needed—but if the light remains on, it’s best to call for assistance. Running an engine without adequate oil pressure can result in costly repairs.

Brake Warning Light

This can indicate several issues, from low brake fluid to worn brake pads or a serious fault in the braking system. It may also come on if the handbrake is left engaged. Brakes are essential for safe driving, so don’t ignore this warning—get it checked immediately.

Tyre Pressure Monitoring Light

If your car is equipped with a tyre pressure monitoring system, this light means one or more tyres may be underinflated. Driving on incorrect tyre pressure can affect handling, fuel efficiency, and tyre wear. A quick check and adjustment at the servo can usually resolve it, but persistent issues may require further inspection.
